– Scripture:
We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. 42 He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead.
Acts 10:34-43
– Reflection:
GOD is for Everyone
Peter is boldly proclaiming that God is for everyone. As hearers of the word today, we are not shocked. Of course, God sees, welcomes, and loves all. That is what we have been taught. It was not what Peter had been taught. It was not what the original hearers had been taught. This was cutting-edge information. Talking to Cornelius and his family, Peter goes a bit further. He proclaims Jesus as Lord of all. ALL. Every person, every nation, Jew or Gentile. This is politically charged. Peter is placing Jesus above the emperor, who is titled lord. Peter is challenging the existing structures of power. As Easter people, we celebrate this lordship and inclusivity and proclaim the good news of new life for all. As life goes on, what does it mean for us?
Do we challenge the systems of power or change how we worship systems of power?
Where do we go from here?
After the resurrection, Peter had to think differently. Are we willing to allow life to go on as normal, or are we willing to invite the power of resurrection to change us? Even if the change is unknown, may we trust in the God who brings new life for all of us?
Our Prayer for Today
God, continue to change us even as life goes on. May we not wait until we retire, until we slow down, or until next Easter. Move among and in us, God, in ways that bring the needed change. In the name of your resurrected son, we pray. Amen.
