– Scripture:
The seventy came back triumphant. “Master, even the demons danced to your tune!” Jesus said, “I know. I saw Satan fall, a bolt of lightning out of the sky. See what I’ve given you? Safe passage as you walk on snakes and scorpions, and protection from every assault of the Enemy. No one can put a hand on you. All the same, the great triumph is not in your authority over evil, but in God’s authority over you and presence with you. Not what you do for God but what God does for you—that’s the agenda for rejoicing.”

              Living out Love

In this passage, it seems that Jesus is pointing to the love of the seventy-two leaders who went out into the community and returned a lot happier than when they left. They were to reach out to total strangers sharing the good news of Christ and offering healing, prayers, words of peace and comfort, and breaking bread with those they come in contact with. Those that did not welcome them were to shake the dirt from those locations off their sandals. That shook any hostility or incivility out of the hearts. They could see that even Satan’s demons were subjects to them through the name of Jesus Christ. To go out into the community speaking to people sharing how you came to Christ, letting them know all that is waiting for them, but while doing so, noticing the community welcomes them and allowing them a space to speak and share. They were also prepared for those who would not accept them; they moved on without a fuss. That is the power we have within us, and it is not to be abused; it is to help and nurture those who need us and need prayer or a kind word spoken over them and their families.

Where do we go from here?

We honor Christ by taking up the same yoke and doing the work of the seventy-two too. If a person does not accept you or the words offered to them in the name of Jesus Christ, leave that place and shake the dust from your shoes. This will show that whatever happens in that place is not on you as you were trying to aid in their acceptance of Christ in their hearts.

Our Prayer for Today

Father God, as we seek to live out love to strangers, guide our feet and shape our hearts. Help us love strongly and forgive easily as we try to make new connections in Christ. Amen.
